After his election in 2011, the governor of St. Petersburg has not been making very many friends. In March 2012, he passed legislation banning the promotion of homosexuality. The most recent group of people he has upset is the fans of the local football team, Zenit. As a result of a lack of funding, work on upgrading their stadium has finished, and Georgy Sergeyevich helpfully suggested that fans sell their dachas and pay out of their own pocket. In response, at their most recent match, they adopted a new chant – “the governor’s an idiot”. The refrain can be heard clearly and loudly for the whole two minutes of the video below. The word they use (жлоб) is important – the governor recently accused St. Petersburgers of being “жлобы” because they were disrespectful to a presidential convoy in the city.

A quick explanation for anyone who’s not up to date. The governor of St. Petersburg [Georgy Sergeyevich] Poltavchenko called the city’s residents IDIOTS after people seemed to be unhappy that Medvedev had come to St. Petersburg and caused traffic jams and inconvenience. Poltavchenko called it idiotic behaviour from St. Petersburgers, that they booed Medvedev’s motorcade. He said that citizens made obscene gestures at the motorcade, and “raised their fingers”. “I’ve never seen such idiocy, to be frank”, Poltavchenko said.
