Police in the Urals start the hunt for a crocodile fugitive
In the morning of 28 August, Ekaterinburg police began the hunt for a crocodile that local residents spotted on the banks of the Iset river, RIA Novosti reports
A witness reported the animal to law enforcement after seeing the predator not far from the zoo. The man who saw the crocodile said at the time that there were no people near the crocodile. The police came out to the site of the incident, but they have not yet been able to catch the crocodile, the animal hid in the water.
Law enforcement admitted at the time that there are no special instructions for this sort of incident. “All the same, it’s not really within our remit, catching animals… we don’t even have any instructions on what to do if a crocodile is found.
The police contacted zoo employees to consult with them and so they could explain the subtleties of catching a predator. Law enforcement have warned Ekaterinburg residents that if they see the crocodile, they should not try to catch it themselves.
The exact sizes of the escaped crocodile have not been reported. Also, there is no information about what precise species the animal is. It has been suggested that the crocodile escaped from the circus, but the establishment have said that all of their artists are in their right places. The police are also looking at other alternatives, for example that is could have broken out of a pet shop, or escaped its owner.
