Netizens Campaign to Reunite Man with his Car

At the time of writing, the author has not yet recovered his car, and an co-ordinated effort by netizens is underway to reunite the poor man with his vehicle. The man found his car through a car trading website, and below is the story so far …

From Ya Plakal:

Car stolen in St. Petersburg shows up in Irkutsk …

An employee of the procurator’s office is driving our car (a Hyundai Solaris, stolen two months ago) in Irkutsk on Barricade Street, building 61, and now (05.04.13 16:30 local time) we’re just standing here and don’t know what to do. The procurator’s employee doesn’t want to hand over the car, won’t present himself (he’s got 4 stars) and has called his cops. We have all the documents for the car (registration, insurance) for the St. Petersburg licence plates, but he’s changed the locks on the car. Give me some advice on what to do, I’m afraid that I’m not going to be able to get my car back from a procurator in a different city.

cops, so anyone who wants to come and support us, I’ll tell you how we found the car, but I’m not going to say until we’ve got the car back … we found out he’s a procurator because he’s in a procurator’s uniform with four stars, the procurator’s sitting in his car so starting a fight with him won’t help and I don’t want to.

We’ve let his tyres down so he doesn’t drive off.

Comments from Ya Plakal:

Alternate:

How did you find it?? Just don’t say “we were just walking around Irkutsk and suddenly we saw a car we recognised”, because that’d be an absolute miracle!

Хитрожов:

Can you not make a statement to the local traffic police?

Скромныйгорожанин:

Author, please explain to the country HOW you could work out exactly where the car was over a few thousand kilometres?

ВЕТЕР:

What if it’s not your car?

Oncore:

If you’ve got the documents in your hands and the licence plates are there, then just bravely take it. With a tow truck, for example.

I’ve got a question, what was he doing, just driving it round without any documents?

gugman: (responding to above)

He’s a procurator, he can drive around not just without documents, but shitfaced, it’s written in their job description.

dimonmsk:

“It’s got our St. Petersburg licence plates, but he’s changed the locks”… yeah, it’s a load of crap, this just doesn’t happen.

MadeInMoscow:

This isn’t a procurator, it’s a procurator’s assistant, and it’s not definite that the procurator will cover for him. If you’ve got all the documents in your hand, and the VIN behind the glass matches, then smash the glass, like “the locks are broken” or “the keyfob’s not working”. By the way, does the car open with a keyfob?

grundig:

Put on silent trackers, you’ll be able to see the car wherever it goes.

meloch:

The cops came, we described the car and they’ve impounded it, but I’ve got absolutely no idea on what grounds, I’m the owner, I’ve not broken any laws, the documents are in my hands … I’m worried that it’ll be there for a long time at the request of the procurator, and me as well … I’m going to the office now …

[Note: this is the original author of the main post above]

stohuev:

Break the windscreen, let them take you to court, there the truth will out. It’ll be a shame if the car’s not actually yours, it’s the procurator’s …
But, he who dares and all that …

Zrak:

Well guys, time to place your bets, is the author going to [prove his story is true and] post photos or not?

Green789:

I’m popping out to the shops for a beer, I’ll be back in five minutes, I’m waiting for the rest of the story …

PathFounder:

For those just joining us, the author has explained that it’s not a procurator who has the car! It’s an Fsin [Federal Penitentiary Service] worker.

m0id0dir:

Photo, I’ve obscured the number but left the region, with love from Irkutsk

The stolen car

meloch:

They have to give the car back at any rate, they can hold it in the impound, but they have to give it back, I’m sitting here with the documents asking for the car, they can’t not give it back … they can hold it as evidence and I’ll blow my lid

meloch:

I’m at the hotel “Russ” now. The police told me that I legally had to leave without my car, but their bosses rang and told them to give the car to the FPS worker, and he drove off in it… they called him in to talk first, then he left and they called me in. It was only at the end of the conversation they said he’d gone, ie: for anyone who asks why I didn’t lie down in front of the wheels, I didn’t even know that he’d let, I thought he was waiting in the corridor … I let the wheels down, but I didn’t puncture them because I hoped to leave in the car myself, so they inflated them. TOMORROW AT 10:30 THEY SAID TO COME BACK TO THE SAME DEPARTMENT, POLICE DEPARTMENT 6 at 12 Shevtsova, ANYBODY WANTING TO SUPPORT ME OR CHECK IF THE STORY IS TRUE – YOU’RE WELCOME

That’s all for tonight guys, go to sleep. We’ll find out more tomorrow.

meloch:

Situation at 13:00 MSK and 18:00 Irkutsk time, I’m sitting in the department, no car, the FPS guy took it yesterday, and I’ve not seen it again, the FPS guy came here, but in a different car, and it looks like I’ll never see my car again …

Am I being an idiot, or was there a GPS beacon?

merik:

Are you on your own? No-one from YaPlakal has come to see you?

meloch:

The FPS worker is called Evgeniy Vladimirovich Kayumov, born in 1981.

Guys, I’ve done everything I can, I’ve written a statement to the police, the procurator, I’ve had an interview with those in charge, and the investigator is flatly refusing to give me my car back… I’ve already spent enough money on this and my pockets are empty, guys from the forum are trying to get safekeeping rights over the car

At this point, it appears that the author has given up attempting to get his car back, and is instead returning to St Petersburg to press charges against the man who stole it. Netizen efforts are ongoing, however.
