A gay man, paratroopers, and OMON fight on Palace Square
On Paratroopers Day, an LGBT activist tried to hold a one-man picket on Palace Square in St. Petersburg, right in the middle of the paratroopers’ heated festivities. The paratroopers did not put up with such “arrogance” and tried to beat the gay activist. OMON stopped the fight, but were unable to arrest the attacker, whose fellow paratroopers fought off the police, showing who’s boss of the city on Paratroopers Day.
As a result, in St. Petersburg, paratroopers and representatives of the gay community did not come together in unity, as LGBT activists hoped.
The one-man picket that the St. Petersburg LGBT activist Kirill Kalugin set up on Palace Square on the 2nd of August occured as current and former paratroopers gathered there in a state of drunkenness, and was destined to end in a massacre.
The paratroopers were unable to tolerate the existence of someone so openly expressing their views on sexual minorities and ran in to teach the “f****t” some common sense.
OMON, who had been in place on sites where the paratroopers met to walk about since the morning were right there and rushed in to pull the picketer out. Nevertheless, the LGBT activist, who was able to show a poster and raise a rainbow flag, was rather seriously crushed before the police were able to, as they say, lead him away from further sin. [Note: to lead someone away from sin commonly means to rescue them from further harm (the sins being those of other people), however the words “as they say” here lead me to believe that this is a play on words, and that the author is unable to resist showing that s/he considers the homosexuality to be the sin.]
The police, however, were unable to arrest the homophobic paratrooper, because his comrades, no less riled up, pulled the detainee away from the police, stopping them from putting him in the prison van. The police ended up retreating.
In short, the holiday was successful both for the courageous LGBT activist, and the paratroopers who fought for “morality”, and even the compliant OMON.
