From Echo Moskvy:
Interior Ministry report about a secret network of back street casinos in Moscow and the oblast
More than ten illegal gambling clubs have been found. The daily income of each location was over 100,000 roubles [£1800, 2,200€] per day. The organisers of the business were born in Georgia and Udmurtia. They controlled the club’s activities from a distance. Some suspect that the deputy head of the police department in the Moscow region of Biryulyovo-East was giving these illegal gambling businesses protection.
Comments from Echo Moskvy:

Amnesty for the criminals!! A medal for the cop! We’ve been through this already.
winsearcher:
Links to protection – it’s a truly contagious disease. The consequences are well known: chase, prison, etc… but it’ll all end well, they’ll close the case, like they did with Ignatenko.

Hunt around in the capital, you’ll find a few more than that.
iwanow:
Disclosures like this have already taken place – the prosecutors are quickly amnestied by those they were covering for. I suppose they must have forgotten this Georgian of Udmurtian descent!
deltaplan:
We mustn’t blame the cop straight away. The powers that be won’t sell out their own. They’ll write that they didn’t find anything illegal about the cop’s activities.

A scientific version of pick-up sticks
dosenoffner:
Nice work, police! Now, you need to go after the next 100,000 backstreet stadiums in Moscow!
ded64:
Suspected, not accused.
algo:
They open them themselves, they protect them themselves to get medals, and then it all starts again.
andrejs:
The prosecutor’s getting rid of the competition.

They were being protected by the new generation of Moscow prosecutors.
